A
concert review by Katrin Wagner:
Concert
number 69...
Karsten and I are joined by our friend Christel on
Saturday morning. She has already driven for almost 3
hours from her hometown Duisburg, so that I take over the
driving duties to Regensburg with my poor old car.
Today's a very special show: it will be the first SAILOR
concert in Germany after Henry's return to the band.
After a long and tiring drive we arrive in Regensburg at
4.30 pm and check in at our hotel. Just in that moment we
bump into Phil and Henry who return from the soundcheck
at the nearby venue.
While the four SAILORs meet at the restaurant, we are
joined by fan Rolf and his wife Marita to talk and pass
the time until the beginning of the concert. A little
later, Grant, Henry and Phil decide to have some hours of
sleep, while Peter stays with us to talk and have a few
drinks.
The band is a little shocked at first, because the show
doesn't take place in a normal concert hall but in a
shopping centre. There are two stages - one at each end
of the big building. As we arrive in front of the stage
on the left, where SAILOR are going to perform, we are
fortunately able to get straight to the front, as most
people are now watching the Spencer Davis Group at the
other end of the building. The stage is very small so
that there is just enough space for the four SAILORs and
the Nickelodeon.
When the show is just about to start we notice that the
Nickelodeon is on stage and ready for the show but
without any side panels. It turns out that - according to
new roadie Mark - there has been no chance to get through
the crowd to put these on the Nickelodeon from the mixing
desk just before the show, so that the "Nick"
has to stay like this for the show.
In the meantime the place is full of enthusiastic people
again, all waiting for SAILOR in front of the stage and
all around it as well as on the first floor of the
shopping centre. The host of the show wants to announce
SAILOR, but they are not there yet. Instead, he asks the
audience some questions to cover the gap and finds out
that there are some people who have travelled very far:
from Kassel and Duisburg. Suddenly I find myself being
pulled up on stage by the host, asking my why such a
young person like me travels so far to see SAILOR etc.
Later Karsten has to go up on stage as well to sing a
part of "A Glass Of Champagne" and - as SAILOR
are still not ready yet - the whole announcement of poor
host Wolfgang takes about 20 minutes.
SAILOR finally start their show at about 11.40 pm with a
marvellous set, received by a very enthusiastic audience.
Peter, Grant, Henry and Phil are in a great mood and the
show has some very funny moments (Peter: "I can't
sing, I've got beer up my nose") ;-). The set
includes a few surprises like "Blame It On The Soft
Spot" which we have heard on many recent occasions
but only once in our lives with Henry at a concert in
January 1997!
Highlight at the end is - of course - the famous
"Full Monty" which is not very easy to do on
this small stage.
After the show SAILOR stay to sign autographs and sell
CDs and DVDs. In the meantime many people join us to say
that they are really impressed by SAILOR's show tonight
and especially by captain Peter who - according to many
fans around us - is simply marvellous! ;-)
Later we briefly meet the boys at the hotel again, before
everyone finally goes to bed at about 3 am.
At 6.45 am SAILOR have to leave Regensburg again to drive
to Berlin for a TV show recording of "Die
Hitgiganten" for German SAT1 television. So,
Karsten, Christel and I also get up early to say goodbye
to the SAILORs before we also drive back home again...

A
concert review by Rolf Breitling:
Excited as ever we drove
to Regensburg on Saturday the 22nd of October to see the
boys live again after more than a year. At breakfast we
listened to the "Live In Berlin" CD in order to
get into the right mood, and on the way we listened to
the new Best Of Album "Down By The Docks". Just
after we had arrived in Regensburg and had visited the
venue, watching Peter walk through the shopping centre, I
received a message from Katrin from the SAILOR club,
whom I should meet together with her brother Karsten and
their friend Christel at SAILOR's hotel. There, the 4
SAILORs sat at the restaurant; while we joined Katrin and
Karsten. There was a lot to talk about and many news to
hear. Even Peter Lincoln joined us as relaxedly
and naturally that I had never expected it. He is a
very congenial and funny contemporary. Time until the
beginning of the concert flew.
After the shows of Middle Of The Road and
the Spencer Davis Group it was nearly time: SAILOR
were announced and had a more than 10 minutes delay. The
funny host of the radio station Charivari bridged
the time gap with an interview of Katrin and made
Karsten sing quite a good version of "A Glass Of
Champagne". Cap K. nearly got as much applause as
the band later on...
When SAILOR finally came on stage, a dream came true,
because Henry Marsh was back at his side of the
Nickelodeon. He was very nervous at the beginning of the
show but really had an incredible joy of playing.
Peter, who had already joined us at the hotel, was in a
very funny mood and started rocking staright away. Grant
worked as hard and superior as usual behind his drums,
and Phil sang "Mack The Knife", while
Peter did the lead vocals on "Karma Chameleon".
The concert was over much too fast; but after the show
people had the chance to collect autographs; and I was
able to briefly talk to Henry about his fantastic album
"The Other Side Of The Ocean".
Like every concert of SAILOR it was clinking
experience, this time also especially because of Katrin
and Karsten. Many thanks to you two :-)
