"Im a romantic
fool"
Sweet
singer Pete Lincoln played a solo concert at the Dolce
and also told jokes
The Dolce theatre is only
half full, but nevertheless the waiting guests are even
more excited: To see Pete Lincoln, singer of the band
Sweet, who performs on his own this time. Ive
never seen him solo, says Dirk Menzel who came all
the way from Offenbach to this concert. With Sweet he saw
him several times, as he likes the band since his
childhood days with their hits like Ballroom Blitz,
Teenage Rampage and Blockbuster. The
lights go out, Lincoln starts with the cover song Walking
In Memphis by Marc Cohn and Cher as well as Boys
Of Summer by Don Henley, before presenting an own
song: All At Sea, a love song, of which he
performs several more. He cant say why. Its
left to the imagination of the listeners who simply enjoy
the beautiful ballads. If you allow it, Ill
sing some more of those, Im a romantic fool
after that Ill do some of the crazier stuff,
he announces.
The stage is sparsely set, with a bar table and
loudspeakers for Lincolns e-guitar, the only
instrument that accompanies his strong, melodic voice.
Well-behaved and a bit formal, the audience sits in the
plush seats at the beginning. But without much trouble,
Lincoln gets them all to sing along. He also tells jokes,
not without cracking himself. One about Helmut, for
example, who drives around in his Porsche and is
overtaken by a three-legged chicken. As fast as he can he
follows the animal to a farm. As the farmer explains, he
breeds the extraordinary poultry, as he needs three legs
for his family: himself, his wife and his son. He doesnt
know how they taste though. We cant catch
them.
Before Sweet, Lincoln was an active member of Sailor.
Their legendary hits A Glass Of Champagne and
Girls Girls Girls also got sung before he
came to the promised crazier stuff, a medley
of Poker Face, Hey Joe and Fox
On The Run. The audience is taken with it. Super
concert! This musician makes great music, knows his
job very well and the audience is great too, says
listener Stephan Rosenbecker from Steinfurth during the
break. Lincoln is also enthusiastic, as promoter Wolfgang
Langsdorf explains before the beginning of the second
half. He just loves having such an audience.
People, youre really great. Having been
complimented like this, the guests do their best when
Lincoln asks what he should sing next. Songs of Bruno
Mars, Billy Joel and even Andrea Berg are the suggestions
that he receives. Im not a real juke-box,
he smiles, and instead he delivers songs of Sting, Cliff
Richard and Queen. Impressive how he handles the high
bits of Bohemian Rhapsody, being asked for
it.
Sweet hits like Poppa Joe and Co-Co
arent missing - everybody especially wants to hear
those on an evening like this. The audience thanks him
with standing ovations for a successful concerts. Lincoln
returns with favour with a long encore: Wig Wam Bam,
Little Willy and Hot Love by
T-Rex. The last song is Love Is Like Oxygen
what seems appropriate for a romantic fool.
